Q:

Could I be pregnant?

I've been stressing this for the last few days. First, I've been on birth control (Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo) for six months. I've never missed a pill and I've never been late on taking one anymore than 2-3 hours. My boyfriend and I always use protection and we check the condoms religiously. But about two weeks ago we had unprotected sex SHORT unprotected sex, no longer than a minute. He didn't ejaculate but pre-cum may have been a factor. I'm almost 100% sure. Could I be pregnant? I've had the pressure in the middle of my abdomen but closer to my right side for the past two days and my breasts have felt more tender than usual. I also feel like my appetite has increased (but I could just be thinking that up). Acne has increased. I'm having slight cramps in the lower abdomen/vaginal area. Please, I'm very worried. If anyone could shed some light, please do. I know birth control when taken correctly is high effective. But things do happen.

Hi anon345,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community!

That is great that you have always stuck to taking your birth control regularly like that. You are correct that when birth control is taken at the same time each day, it is more effective.

In some situations pre ejaculation can carry sperm. However, since you and your boyfriend only had unprotected sex for no longer than a minute, I do not think that is an issue here. Also, since you are on the pill, you have good protection with that.

I think your stress is what is most likely causing the pressure in your stomach, acne and other symptoms. However, since the only true way to know if you are pregnant is through a pregnancy test, I recommend you take one. I think taking that and seeing the result would help ease fears and provide you with more clarity.

I hope this has helped! Please keep me updated and let me know if you have further questions.

Best,
Erin
