I am 16 and pregnant. I have a wonderful boyfriend and we are very much in love. I know thats not all i need to get me through this so i need help. I dont have any female support my mother wants me to get an abortion and i want to keep the baby. So id like some advise from mothers to help me know what to expect and how to stay healthy. The main thing im worried about is accidentally doing something that could hurt the baby!! I have read about diets and such but it would help me greatly to have personal advise from a mother to go off of. Thank you Ladies!!

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

Knowing what to expect and staying healthy are very important especially in your first trimester, but pregnancy is different for every woman.

As I'm sure you are aware, first and foremost, prenatal care is of the utmost important. Medical professionals offer support that others can't.

There is a book called What to Expect when You're Expecting which can serve as a handy reference.  Also there is the What To Expect website. It gives you information week by week and you get to chat with other mothers and moms-to-be.

Here are a couple great EmpowHER resources to get you started:

With regards to your diet, it's important that your main concern be what's best for the baby and you nutritionally. Here's another great article that speaks specifically on that topic:

I commend you for wanting to keep the baby and being proactive about having a healthy pregnancy.  However, without knowing your individual circumstance, I can understand why your mother might want different for you.  There's pregnancy (9 months long responsibility) and then there is parenting (life long responsibility). And although you don't see her point of view as support, I'm sure she does. You are, her baby (16 years old baby) after all, she's been supporting you since she carried you in her womb and still till this day.  Sometimes love and support doesn't always come in the form of agreement.  Experience is the best teacher, which is why there is a difference of opinion between you and your mom.  If you have a daughter, you'll understand with time.

I'm also glad to hear you have a wonderful boyfriend. The pressure of becoming a parent and maintaining a good relationship as young adults can be super stressful, not only for you but for him as well.  Both of you are going to need a lot of support. Check out the local Planned Parenthood in your area.

Getting support online and from organizations is fine, but reach out to those adults who love and care about you that are close by. They may not agree with your choice, but as you show them that you are taking this seriously, the love and support that they can offer you during the pregnancy, and long term when the baby arrives is priceless.

Much success with your pregnancy and becoming a mother.

Be well,
