I am in my mid-30s, and have recently been having pain in my hips in the middle of the night. It reminds me of the RLS (restless leg syndrome) commercials, although I do not have any of these symptoms (no needle-sensation, no crawling-sensation). It is a dull ache, and I try to move my hips and legs around to get rid of the pain (it feels like it is deep inside, not a muscle or bone), but moving it seems to irritate it a little more. It is actually not on my hip bone, but closer to the middle of my "gluteus maximus" on each side. It's been happening the past few weeks, always around 2am or 3am and wakes me up.
I've been taking some ibuprofen, and eventually falling back asleep, but would rather not have to keep taking medication.
When I was pregnant with my child 3 years ago, I had a real problem with my sciatic (spelling?) nerve in my hips. Feels similar, but not the same.
Any suggestions?

I read your description of pain and it is so similar to mine. Just started to feel the pain over the last month. Thinking of going to the doctor. Did you ever find out what was the cause? I have three kids that keep me going and something always gets pulled but this feels different. Keeping me from a full night's sleep is definitely no fun. Thank you for writing about your experience.

Good to know that I'm not the only one out there suffering with this pain! I am a 45 yr old female average fitness not overweight!
July 10, 2011 - 12:04pmPain does'nt happen every night on av 4x a week & not always conseculatively. Usually up between 3-4 and it's exactly what one of the ladies said like I've run a marathon or what I say is like I've been forced to lie on the hard floor for a very long time!

Have you spoken to your doctor about your symptoms?

I have arthritis and that is what it sounds like you have. If it feels sort of like a tooth ache, then I would bet on arthritis.

I know this is a woman's site but I was searching my symptoms and this is exactly what I have. It started off a few years ago, very mild and never at night, pain in my hip. Now I wake up on a nightly bases with a dull, deep in my hip, pain... I can't sleep it hurts so much. Taking Ibuprofen helps and I can fall asleep again... but I don't want to rely on those.
I'm an active, yet not as active as I'd like to be with this hip, 23 year old male. I went to the doctor once.... got a cat scan, like that would show anything deep, and it showed nothing. I'm finally considering going back to seek more help....... The main thing I want is a diagnosis........ OHHH BTW the affected leg.... its shrunk significantly in size recently.

I still have hip pain at night time too, I wanna roll on my back to get comfort but like you say us pregnant ladies are not allowed to lay on our backs. I think it is just from being pregnant, I know a few others who have had hip pain during their pregnancies as well. Good luck to you!

I toss and turn all night with pain cramping like sensations in my hips. It feels releived when i roll on my back for a few minutes, but not resolved completely and i cant sleep on my back. I do have restless leg syndrome as well but not usually what is happening at the time.I tend to get that more sitting. I have had this hip doscomfort over the past year and progressively getting worse. I do have liposcleroderma which is venous insufficeny. Not sure if it has anything to do with this. I also get severe muclce cramps in my legs and feet at times. I am a mess and the Doctors dont always seem to know what to tell you, except try exercizing or stretching. I am not active I do sit all day at a computer, so maybe its the culprit and i never drink water on diet coke. Maybe i just answered my own questions. it's hard to change bad habits.

Well after years of hip pain at night. Dr sent me to consultant who suggested a hip injection. So I had my injection 2 days ago Local anesthetic, lubricant and dye was injected into my hip socket through the groin under x-ray. They said it would be rather uncomfortable for next few days but should give relieve after that. They suspect I may have a tear in the labrum which is fibourous cuff that seals the hip joint. This injection is for diagnosis of this and if confirmed, they will do keyhole to stitch it up.
