Since we, as human beings, are made up mostly of water, it's important to be hydrated. Poor hydration can result in dry and dehydrated skin, and on an extreme level, it can cause us to become ill and die.
When skin is dehydrated there's a limited amount or no moisture in the intracellular system of the skin. This condition is most likely in the winter months, when the environment is harsher, but can take place at any time.
The signs and symptoms can be similar to a sunburn, including redness, a tight feeling to the skin and even a burning sensation. Dry lines and a rough texture may develop and the skin may flake and become easily irritated. Some people get extreme itching, even painful itching.
Causes include environmental factors, such loss of moisture from the use of heating and air conditioning systems during winter and summer months. Other causes include saunas, wind, pollution, illness, medications and smoking.
There are a number of things you can consider to treat this, including washing the skin with a mild, non-foaming cleanser that won't strip lipids. It would be best to avoid bar soap, use a washcloth (no hard scrubbers) for exfoliation and use a rich, oil-based moisturizer. A good suncreen with an SPF of 15 or higher will also help protect your skin.
