Hi Anon

Thanks for your question!

Pink eye (or conjunctivitis) is usually acquired from person to person; it's highly contagious. But it's not always the case:

Causes include:

  • Viral infection
  • Bacterial infection, such as staphylococcus or streptococcus
  • Allergic reaction, usually related to seasonal allergies
  • Chemical irritation caused by:
    • Air pollutants
    • Soap
    • Smoke
    • Chlorine
    • Make-up
    • Other chemicals

Both viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are highly contagious.

It's passed person-to-person by sharing makeup or simply by one person rubbing their eyes and then making physical contact with another person. It's incredible how many times a day we touch our faces - hundreds.Towels and bedding can also transport pink eye.

I hope this helps and thanks for writing!
