Hi Anon,

20-30% of pregnant women will bleed during their first trimester. Some possible causes of bleeding are:

If you have what is called placenta previa, then painless bleeding can occur. Placenta Previa occurs when a baby's placenta partially or totally covers the mother's cervix — the doorway between the uterus and the vagina-- and this is what causes that painless bleeding.

Some type of infection in the pelvic cavity or urinary tract may cause bleeding.

After intercourse some women may bleed because the cervix is very tender and sensitive. You should discontinue intercourse until you have been seen by your doctor. This is to prevent any further irritation—having normal sexual intercourse does not cause a miscarriage.

And finally-- miscarriage. Although it doesn't mean you may be having a miscarriage. If you are having other symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, passage of tissue, or a cramping feeling-- please contact your doctor.

As common as bleeding may be in the first trimester, this warrants a call to your doctor to see if he/she may want to have you come in.

All the best,
