Q:

I had sex about a week or two before my expected period, what are the chances I'm pregnant? And can you have a period, and still be pregnant?

I don't know the exact date of my last period, but I believe it was around August 18th. I've always had a very irregular cycle, going anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks between periods. I had unprotected sex and my boyfriend came inside me on September 11th & 15th. I have several questions. What are the chances that I am pregnant?? At what point, if I don't get my period, should I take a pregnany test (& the results be accurate)?? Is it possible that I might get my period anyway, and still be pregnant? I've read that it is possible, but it's usually an irregular period. Mine are usually fairly light & only last about 3 days. What might be different if I am still pregnant? Also, I can usually tell when I am about to start, I get really awful cramps for about a week before hand. I have not had this at all or any other signs that I might be getting ready to start my period, or that I might be pregnant. Except that I have had to pee a lot. Any information and advice would be helpful, thanks!

i would say that ur chances of being pregnant is very high. normally u ovulate on day 14. if i was u would wait for my period and if it dont come. take a pregnancy test! I had my period on the 1st and it ended on the 5th. 8 days after i had unprotected sex for 3 nights and he came in me all of those times. Am i pregnant?

Hi AshBrie,

I wanted to let you know that I answered your "am I pregnant?" question here: Am I Pregnant?.

Also, it is not possible to tell someone their chances of pregnancy are "high", based on the information that she ovulated on "day 14". That is actually a misconception and broad generalization that women ovulation in "mid-cycle", with the assumption that all women are an exact 28-day cycle.

In fact, most women fluctuate from cycle-to-cycle, and cycle length can vary from 21-35 days...so even women who do ovulate on that magical exact "mid-cycle" date would have 15 days of possible ovulation dates with this broad variation. Plus, throw in the other fact that women probably do not ovulate on the exact mid-cycle date, but there is a variation of this as well---you can count 3-5 days on either side of the mid-cycle date as possible ovulation days, which can total around 10 days of possible dates. That is a lot of variation, and probably why it is easier for people (and health care providers) to just generically say that women "ovulate mid-cycle" or that women ovulate on "day 14", for ease of explanation...but it short-changes those women who actually need/want to know their predicted dates of ovulation (so they can prevent a pregnancy or have a higher chance of conceiving during their most fertile time frame).

Just wanted to clear this fact up for women!

Well, I got my period on the 18th. but it was pretty light & only really lasted like 2 days (but like I said before, it's not very uncommon for my periods to be short & light), & sense then I've been getting really dark stains on my underwear periodically. Could this be signs that I am pregnant? & Do I have to wait another 6 weeks to test, or should I test next week (it'll be 6 weeks since my last period before this)? Thanks for all the help.

I think if I were you, I"d test next week. With your light period and the spotting since then, it is doubtful that you are pregnant, but it's always possible. If you did happen to be pregnant, next week should be far enough in that it would show up on an HPT.

Is spotting like this rare for you?

Yes. I've never had any issues with spotting, ever. That's why it has me a little worried.

Amber, I'm sure she meant six weeks after your last period, since that seems to be the longest time you go between periods. As far as being pregnant but losing it with your first period -- yes, it's possible for the egg to be fertilized but to not implant; is that what you are asking? And home pregnancy tests are set up to detect HCG, which is a hormone present during pregnancy. If you test positive, it means the test has detected some HCG, and usually this is right around the time of a missed period. Does that help?
