ask: Milky white vaginal discharge

Earlier today I had a clear discharge that just gushed out and this evening I open my legs and what looked like milk came out. I have never seen anything like it before. What does this mean? Am I pregnant? Am I ovulating? Or is this my vagina's way of cleaning itself? Neither discharge had a smell. My menstrual cycle was just last week and was cut short. I have also been having these short moments of feeling like I am going to start on my cycle as well. Any suggestions about what is going on with my body?

Hello Nikitamarya23,

Thank you so much for posting your question! My first response when I read your post is that you may possibly be ovulating or have a yeast infection, but I'm not sure either of these things would cause a clear discharge to gush out of your vagina. It sounds like it was a pretty significant amount of fluid--is that right?

Since you had a shortened menstrual cycle it might be wise to take an at-home pregnancy test, just to be sure. I've heard of women who are newly pregnant having sort of a spotting type of cycle that first month and sometimes even beyond. And pregnancy can cause all sorts of discharges to occur.

Are you feeling any itching in your vagina? If so that might be due to a yeast infection.

Here is a link about vaginal discharges and what is typical and what is not:

If this keeps on happening it would probably be a good idea to give your physician a call. I believe a bit of discharge is usually pretty normal but if it's gushing you might want to see what is going on. Please post again to let us know how you are doing. Best in health, Michelle

Thank you so much for responding.
To give you an idea of the amount of discharge that came out, the clear discharge came out like a menstrual cycle. I could have used a thin sanitary pad for it. In fact, I actually grabbed a paper towel since I wasn't close to tissue and shoved the paper towel down there. It didn't soak it, but it was wet.The clear discharge came out for two to three minutes off and on and then stopped. Later on that evening, i was just a little irritated and so I took a mirror to see what I could see down there and that is when this milky discharge just CAME flowing out. I mean it looked like milk was coming out of my vagina. Never seen anything like it before. :-) Too weird. After that I had no other problems nor a discharge. Just today, I had sex and my boyfriend was saying that I was really really wet and at that point he thought I had come because I was so wet and so he stopped (I guess he must have felt a gush of liquid to come out because he immediately stated before he came out that I was extremely wet. Well...I hadn't come yet, but he had what looked to either be clear or a whitish discharge on his penis. Anyway, I think he wiped it off and wiped me off and we later finished up, so to speak, and he was still talking about how wet I was especially after coming. So he feels as though I came twice, but that first time I was wet was not due to me coming. Well he had some more stuff on him and so did I. Even the sheets got a little wet. I was not burning nor itching. When I went to pee, I had no burning or itching, which usually occurs when I have a yeast infection.
Like you, I have also heard of women who have stated that they have spotting for one of their cycles and then there are no more cycles for 8-9 months. My cycle was cut to about four days. I was heavy the first two days and then afters I was barely flowing. I could probably go an entire day without flowing but may do a little something at night. I would think that because I have been pregnant before that I would know that I was pregnant. That is how it was with my last pregnancy. I took a pregnancy test last week during the time I should have been on my period but it had come to an hault. I tested negative. I surely hate to have to go to the doctor, I really do. I have no insurance and I am still paying a medical bill for when I went to the Gynecologist to get a pap smear. I swear, this lack of health insurance thing is killing me. I guess, sometime today, I will go purchase another pregnancy test. I had to stop by Walgreens earlier today for something for my boyfriend and I stared at the pregnancy test for a few minutes and then said, naaw, I don't need it, I don't feel pregnant and already tested negative. EPT is usually on top of it and I have never tested incorrectly.

I have been experiencing the same gushing. Although it only happens to me 3 times a day maximum, it's to the point that it feels like I actually thought I had urinated on myself of started a very heavy menstrual cycle. It comes out in the same consistency that you talked about. I do not experience any itching, burning, pain during sex, everything else down there is very normal. This is the second time I've experienced this in my life. The first time this happened I was pregnant. I believe I probably am again. I know you said you took a pregnancy test but sometimes it takes up to 6 weeks for an at-home pregnancy test to pick up on the hormones in your urine stream. I'd say wait to see if you start your period and if not, wait up to 2 weeks after you should have started and see if you get different results.

Hello again! Thank you so much for answering and giving me more information. Wow, that really does sound like an unusual experience! The clear discharge was one thing but then to have the milky liquid come out in large amounts would have me also wondering what's going on. I'm sorry you don't have insurance right now; boy, you are in some good company with that. I've heard of more people in your same boat.

I've done some more research online about this issue and from what I'm reading it sounds like it may be a way for your body to naturally cleanse the vagina, just like you said you thought it might be. But the quantity of it has me a bit concerned, and as much as you'd hate to go and get charged, it might be time to see the doctor. I'm wondering if your physician's office has a free nurses line that you could call, or if you called and said it was very important if a nurse could call you back to talk about what you are experiencing. I'd like you to run this past a professional if you can, but I hear you loud and clear on wanting to avoid it due to you not having insurance right now. Please keep us posted on what happens next and what the pregnancy test says, should you decide to buy another one. Big hugs, Michelle

I too have the same problem - milky discharge that spurts out. I always have to wear a panty liner.
Always very wet - too wet really. I have seen a doctor - no infections whatsoever, I recently had more test run to figure out what is going on.

Did they tell you what your discharge was when you went back? It is more than likely a Yeast infection. That is what I found out about my issue.

it might be either yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. Different people have a different reaction to it.
i am suffering frpm it many years now. And no doctor can help me. Medicine treats it for a few days and it comes back again. You should treat both of these infections with differentt type of medication. So you should contact your doctor to finf out what u have.
