My girlfriend is paranoid about condom use. She always doubts the reliability and gets stress until next period. So I have planned for birth control pills. I have heard that it has too many side effects and it's long use might impact life after marriage as well. questions regarding this are

1)What are the side effects of birth control pills?
2)If we have sex on one day,how many days she had to take that pills to avoid conceiving?
3)Do the use of pills delay the period?
4)Do the long term use of such pills hamper womb bearing capacity of women?(we have to think of child after marriage as well)

and finally ,what might be other healthy and safe alternates if she denies using birth contol pills as well?

Dear Helpher

Thanks for your question!

Condoms, when used correctly, are very effective - so if you both are worried about the side effects to the Pill, you're better off staying with condoms.

Some of the risks with the Pill are blood clots (you can read about this here : http://www.empowher.com/news/herarticle/2009/10/01/pill-be-informed-abou...) possible weight gain, or stroke.

The Mayo Clinic has a wonderful Question and Answer section regarding the Pill that should answer all of your questions. You can find it here : http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/birth-control-pill/WO00098

Another issue with the Pill is that if taken with other medication (certain commonly taken antibiotics, for instance) it can lose it's effectiveness. If on the pill and taking an antibiotic, a woman needs to check with her pharmacist about this.

Most women see few side effects but each woman can talk to her doctor about her individual circumstances. For the rest of your questions, it depends on the kind of birth control she's on - there are dozens and each carry their own set of instructions.

Alternatives to the Pill or condoms can be found here : http://www.empowher.com/news/herarticle/2009/03/14/which-birth-control-m...

I hope this helps you!
