I'm a virgin and I don't want to have sex anytime soon. However, what little sexual contact I have had with my bf results in anxiety about pregnancy and I'm too scared about pregnancy risks to have more sexual contact (not sex because I know I'm not ready for that yet)... so my question is whether I should start taking the pill for sexual contact (not sexual intercourse). Do I need to? My friend said the side effects aren't worth it unless you're actually having sex. I'm at the doctors next week about something else and was thinking of mentioning it but I don't know whether to or what to say.

Hello Anonymous,
Welcome to EmpowHER. I am glad you reached out to us. You show maturity and responsibility in taking charge of your health. Speak with your physician, during your upcoming appointment, about birth control options.
Together, you and your doctor can look at the side effects and benefits of each type, from oral contraceptives to IUD.
Fooling around can be just one step away from sexual intercourse. It is wiser to be proactive in preventing an unwanted pregnancy. Since you are still a virgin, I suggest you speak with your doctor about the recombinant human papillomavirus vaccine, such as Gardasil.
Regards,
