I'm 29 years old and in September of 09' was diagnosed with a Cavernous Malformation (AVM) in my right frontal lube. I had it removed in January 10'. Two days ago I just found out the my 27 year old sister has a Arachnoid Cyst in her left frontal lube. ( We're still waiting to see what needs to be done with it.) I'm just wondering what the odds may be to two sister's having unrelated conditions with their Brain's with in a year of each other?

Anon - That's a very interesting question. I was able to find some information from the National Institutes of Health on genetic brain disorders. They state that some are due to random gene mutations or mutations caused by environmental exposure, such as cigarette smoke. Other disorders are inherited, which means that a mutated gene or group of genes is passed down through a family. Still other disorders are due to a combination of genetic changes and other outside factors. You can read the full reference here: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/geneticbraindisorders.html

In terms of your sister's arachnoid cyst, you have come to the right place as we have several members with this condition, several articles that would be helpful for her, and we also have an arachnoid cyst support group.

I found this question relatable because my sister had a small brain cyst in her brain a well and it caused her to have severe migraines..then 3 years later i developed a brain tumor in my pituitary gland called a prolactinoma. My sisters cyst went away on its own, but apparently mine won't resolve on it's own.
It's strange, isn't it? And no one in my family smokes.
