Why am I fascinated with this?

Ever since I was a very young child and even now, I have been fascinated with pregnancy, deliveries, and babies. It almost seems like a hobby or an obsession of some sort, but nothing creepy lol. I always watched movies and tv shows about babies and used to pretend "house" all the time when I was young. My question is, why would I be interested in this ever since I was a young child? I never understood..

Can you tell us more...how old you are now, and is your interest driving you towards a particular career? Many people are interested in topics from a young age, and sometimes it has to do with what we're good at; other times it is from experiences or what we are surrounded by.

Thanks for your response =)

I'm currently 22 and still have an interest in it, but a wider range of health issues now. I watch a lot of different medical shows on Discovery Health. I'm working towards college and have always leaned towards a health field or psychology degree.

Sometimes I thought I had this interest because I wanted to be a mom or grow up fast (something like that), but unsure. My mom is/was pretty overbearing at times, but I have always been really close to her. I also had separation anxiety as a kid. Not sure if that connection would make sense though. =/

I agree that it could be a lifelong interest in medicine or health, but I never understood it or even why that in particular. :)

I guess my next thought is: why wouldn't you be interested in this?

Most kids have separation anxiety (it is part of an important and crucial developmental stage), overbearing parents, and from early ages show particular interests and talents toward certain areas or topics.

I have also always leaned toward the health and psychology fields (did you know there is a field called Health Psychology?!), with my interests more toward mental/emotional wellness. I never was personally fascinated with babies, pregnancy and delivery until I had my own two kids...but I am sure glad there are women (and men!) out there who are interested in this field! I know of many medical doctors, midwives and nurse practitioners who work in OB/GYN who also were fascinated with babies, birth/delivery and pregnancy from very early stages, and somehow "knew" they would work in that field when they were older.

Have you ever volunteered in a hospital or other setting, to help women giving birth, help with pregnancy classes, teach about newborn caregiving...anything that can get you into the field (as a volunteer) to see if this is an interest worth pursuing? You can most certainly combine your interest with psychology...start talking to people in the field, and you would be surprised what you learn!
