Mellanie:
We really don’t know why so many athletes have atrial fibrillation. Some of it may be due to the fact that because they exercise so much and in many cases their heart rates are dipping very low because they are in such a great condition that there’s something related to that that’s triggering A-fib. It may also be that athletes, because of all the exercise they are doing, are actually enlarging their hearts and there’s what’s called atrial stretch and that can actually trigger A-fib.
So a lot of it may be due to the things that there conditioning is doing to their heart. We still have a long ways to go to learn what causes lone atrial fibrillation, particularly in athletes.
