VIDEO - HERSTORY: Rosa Shares How She Felt Before Gastric Bypass Surgery

Rosa recalls how nervous she felt the morning of her gastric bypass procedure.

Rosa:
I was afraid of going into surgery only for the reason that I was going to be put to sleep. That was my biggest fear. “What if I don’t wake up?” I had never been put to sleep before, so that was my biggest fear. But the day that I came in to the hospital to get my procedure done, they were there. I mean, Dr. Dahiya came into my room, along with his partner and they reassured me, “This is what you wanted. We are making it happen; you are going to get better; you are going to get healthy; you are going to see your kids, and everything. There’s nothing to worry about it.”

Amelia did the same thing. I mean, she was there holding my hand. When I got into Operating Room, they knew everything about me. Not just like, there’s another piece of meat in there that they are going to be opening and take whatever they needed to take out. No. That made me feel so secure, that they were there with me.

Like I said, if it was my own member of the family there. You know, your husband or your brother and your sister are not allowed to go in there, but that’s how I felt because besides having Dr. Dahiya there, Amelia was there. Amelia was dressed up more like a nurse, and she can be your best friend.

My husband just dropped me off because he had to go to work, so he just dropped me off, but that was there. I mean, I had Amelia; I had Dr. Dahiya, and all the nurses in the hospital, they were like looking after me. When I came out of the ICU it’s like, I have my family there. She was there, Amelia was there, and Dr. Dahiya checked on me right away.

It wasn’t like, oh, you know, sometimes you don’t see the doctor until the following day. Were you even aware that, who was the surgeon? Not with Dr. Dahiya. They walked me, literally walked me through my waiting room to the Operating Room. They were there; they were holding my hand because I started like, kind of wanted to cry. Like, “This is what you wanted.” “I know. I know, it’s like I am happy. I am going to have it. It’s finally going to happen.” But it was amazing.
