I am a healthy 66 year old who walks 2 to 3 miles a day, swims daily in the summer, and joins a health club in the winter. Diabetes is in my family history along with Polycystic Kidney Disease. The only med's I'm on are for blood pressure, cholesterol, and for my bone health plus a baby aspirin each day.
I am very health conscious and watch my diet. I would like to lose 20 lbs if I could.

Hi Femmie
Thanks for your post and welcome! Good for you! It's wonderful to read you're walking every day, swimming in summer, a member of a health club and maintaining a good knowledge of your family history. We should all take note!
When did you gain the extra weight, or have you always had an extra twenty pounds keeping you warm?! If you gained it after menopause (which is common) there are ways to circumvent it. Is the fat mostly around your abdomen? We have an article about menopausal weight gain here that I'd like you to read : http://www.empowher.com/news/herarticle/2009/05/07/menopause-belly-fat-w...
Here's another great article from a professional trainer about the myths of weight loss : http://www.empowher.com/news/herarticle/2009/08/26/top-10-weight-loss-lies
The simple answer to weight loss (if there are no underlying medical or medication issues) is to use more calories than you take in. Also, I think the best way for you to really gauge how much you're eating is by keeping a journal. Studies show that even the most conscientious eaters don't realize what they are eating until they write it down in a journal every day. You may be snacking too much without realizing it. Are you keeping your portions small?
Your exercise routine seems very good (can you add some weights to it?) and it doesn't seem that medications are a factor in your weight gain so I am wondering if your diet is a factor?
The 20 lbs you are looking to lose - has your doctor suggested this to you? I am also wondering if you're sure you need to lose that amount of weight (it's quite a lot!) or if you are being a little hard on yourself?
