Dr. Fredric Brandt, a celebrity dermatologist, died Sunday in his Florida home at the age of 65.
According to Frederica Burden, a Miami police spokeswoman, the cause of death was suicide.
Dr. Brandt had been dealing with depression for a while, and had more recently been “devastated” by comparisons to a character on Tina Fey’s Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”
On the series, Martin Short plays Dr. Sidney Grant, a blonde plastic surgeon with several similarities to Brandt. However, there is no confirmation that this was the main cause of Brandt's death.
“This man Dr. Fred Brandt was a friend of mine. To think we have to go to such great lengths of adult bullying of a wonderful human being is tragic. This must stop,” Michelle King Robson, founder of EmpowHER , said.
“I loved Fred. He was such a dear man. Kind as kind could be,” Robson said.
Brandt had worked with several celebrity clients including Stephanie Seymour and Madonna. Several celebrities remembered Brandt and his spirit through social media since the announcement of his death.
“My heart is breaking for the loss of Dr. Fredric Brandt. My friend. You will be missed forever and in my heart even longer,” longtime friend Kelly Ripa tweeted on Monday.
