Many of us know the famous story of the young man named Jared who lost an amazing 245 pounds by eating the same meal at Subway every day. His story first got picked up by a college friend of his who wrote for the school newspaper and was quickly seen and published in Men's Health.

Jared went on to represent a healthier lifestyle and to become one of the most relatable, warm, accessible and down to earth spokespeople of all time.

Jared explained that eating a sandwich from Subway was the only way he could stay on any type of "diet." Since he didn't feel deprived because he was eating something he really loved, he was able to be consistent and dedicated to his recovering health.

Since that time, and because of his famous account of loving every meal and feeling it was the only way he could successfully lose weight, many people have looked at Subway as a "healthier" alternative to traditional fast food restaurants.

It is true that if you are not frying meat you are going to create fewer calories from fat than you would if you are frying it. By virtue of this simple fact alone, Subway is a healthier option than a burger restaurant. Sandwiches are simply not traditionally full of fried food.

The turkey and chicken options at Subway of course have fewer calories than the steak and cheese options. Subway also offers good nutritional choices by making salads and vegetable sandwiches available.

You can pick and choose what type of bread you'd prefer -- the whole grain options trumping the white bread options for nutritional value. Having control over the type and amount of cheese, condiments, veggies and sauces you'll be eating on your sandwich also gives you an opportunity to really create a nutritionally sound meal.

Subway also breaks it down for you. They clearly list sandwiches that have six grams of fat or less, as well as a "fresh fit" option which is the leanest Subway option available.
