Dr. Bowden explains the many benefits of vitamin D.

Dr. Bowden:
Well if vitamin D were a starlet it would be on the cover of People Magazine.

It’s the up and coming nutrient, the undiscovered source of so many health benefits that are just becoming clear now.

And it’s becoming so clear that even conventional medicine which tends to pooh-pooh anything that has to do with supplements is beginning to recognize this.

In the United States we have a serum vitamin D test and the general consensus is that 75-80 percent of the country is less than optimal levels.

Now why does it matter? Vitamin D has been shown, here’s the obvious ones – strengthen bones and reduce fractures.

But the ones that are not so obvious that have been showing up in the last couple of years of research, improves mood.

Low levels of vitamin D predict very bad outcomes on the weight loss program. So the lower you are on vitamin D the less chance you have the success in losing weight.

Higher levels of vitamin D predict better physical performance in older adults. What that means is that they are more able to get up out of chairs and open jars and move around and be mobile – that’s all related to vitamin D.

Vitamin D has anti-cancer activities. So when you ask, is it the fountain of youth, it’s certainly a cornerstone of.

When I come up with like people ask me, “What vitamins do I… I don’t like to take vitamins, what do I definitely need to take?”

I usually go with omega-3 fatty acids, FlexNow if it’s a joint issue or an inflammation issue, and vitamin D. And right behind that magnesium and a multiple and probiotics.

But vitamin D is, it is definitely in the top three of the most important supplements that you should be taking.
