VIDEO: Dr. Block - Oxidative Stress, Which Tests Can Determine This?

July 15, 2009 - 2:54pm 91 reads 0 comments

Dr. Block describes the tests that can be used to determine oxidative stress.

Dr. Block:
Some of the testing that we run for oxidative stress includes things like oxidized LDL, lipid peroxides, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, which is a marker for DNA damage. But we also run a lot of the different fido chemicals. We look at coenzyme Q levels. We look at mixed carotenoids, alpha and beta. We look at different tocopherols. We are really analyzing a variety of different markers that even include things like iron levels and ferritin levels.

We know that red meat eaters consume higher levels of iron and we know that when iron is increased oxidative stress will go up as well. And so we try to correct these markers with patients through dietary changes and through the use of carefully chosen nutraceuticals in terms of, you know, whole plant compounds where you can get higher concentrations of things like carotenoids and tocopherols as well as some of the different herbs and green tea and garlic and resveratrol and a lot of different compounds that can actually be targeted for specific types of laboratory and clinical problems that are going on.
