Dr. Henschke:
Nobody really has that answer. However, certainly certain things enhance the development of lung cancer, such as smoking or being exposed to certain chemicals, and we do know that it starts small and at some point, it becomes visible on a CT scan. When it becomes visible on the CT scan, it’s probably in the last half of its lifecycle.

So, there is further research being done on finding it even earlier, but at the moment, we don’t have any other reliable techniques to use. But there’s a lot of active research and it’s been increasing to find it even earlier.

Dr. Claudia Ingrid Henschke, M.D., Ph.D., M.S., is an Attending Radiologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Professor of Radiology in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical School. She is a clinical expert in percutaneous fine needle lung biopsies and thoracic radiology and board certified in Diagnostic Radiology. Dr. Henschke received her master’s degree from Southern Methodist University, her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, and medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine.
