VIDEO: Dr. Henschke - Stage One Lung Cancer, What Is The Survival Rate?

Dr. Henschke shares the survival rate for patients diagnosed with stage one lung cancer.

Dr. Henschke:
Well, if you know after surgery that they are in stage one, then it’s probably around 65 to 70% is the long-term survival rates, but those are all sizes. Now if you take smaller sizes, the smaller the lung cancer is, in stage one, the better the cure rates. So if you have very small, less than a centimeter lung cancer, it might be as high as 90%. So, lung cancer is a curable disease if you find it early and you are able to take it out.

Dr. Claudia Ingrid Henschke, M.D., Ph.D., M.S., is an Attending Radiologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Professor of Radiology in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical School. She is a clinical expert in percutaneous fine needle lung biopsies and thoracic radiology and board certified in Diagnostic Radiology. Dr. Henschke received her master’s degree from Southern Methodist University, her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, and medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine.
