Dr. Horwitz:
Well, it’s been shown in several studies but not uniformly, so I think the problem is we’ve just recognized what a horrendous epidemic we have of low vitamin D levels in this country.
Now we have known that vitamin D levels – low vitamin D is associated with multiple sclerosis and they have just done large-scale studies that show that over time people with very low levels of vitamin D are at a much, much higher risk of developing MS, and so the question is, “By supplementing early in life can we prevent it?” Those studies will take years and years to do but until then it’s a very safe intervention so we recommend it.

Dr. Randy Horwitz, Ph.D., M.D., received a B.S. degree in biochemistry from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in Immunology and Molecular Biology from the University of Florida. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospitals (Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland.
