Dr. Pohl:
There are criteria that the National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse have established for what’s too much drinking. I’ll preface that by saying that if a woman is drinking and she has problems related to the drinking, one drink’s too much, but the standard in the field is if a woman drinks four drinks in a 24-hour period or more than six drinks in a week, that could be looked at as a potential problem with alcohol.

The drink would be an ounce and a half of spirits, six ounces of wine, eight ounces of beer. That’s not a gold standard. So I really would give it back to you, the individual, and say if you are drinking and you have concerns about your drinking, chances are you have a drinking issue. Whether it’s alcoholism or not is irrelevant. The question is what are you going to do about it?
