Cancer Survivors Attitude is a Choice

February 16, 2009 - 9:35am 193 reads 0 comments

Attitude is a choice. Do you believe that? I do. I have learned that even when things are terrible I have a choice. So do you.

I never knew darkness until the oncologist told me to "get my affairs in order." I had been prepared for a different diagnosis. I was in shock that I was being told that my cancer was stage IV. How could I be in the very stage that I had read about where people don’t survive very long? It stunk, but I still had a choice.

I chose to be on the good side of those horrific statistics. It’s like the movie "Dumb and Dumber" when he asks what chances are of getting a date. She replies, “One in a million.” To which he says, “So you are telling me I’ve got a shot.” I decided that I also had a shot. Rather than wallowing in the "Why Me?" I was going to choose "Try Me."

From that point on I chose my attitude everyday. I believed that the chemo was only doing good things and I was strong and getting stronger everyday. I believed that aches and pains were bone rebuilding itself. I chose to believe that my mind was a tool to use for good. I killed cancer with every choice I made.

Ten years later I am still choosing my attitude everyday. You can do the same. It’s about turning negative into positive. You might be surprised at how far it gets you.
