Do certain positions in bed actually affect your odds of getting pregnant? The
American Pregnancy Association (APA) says yes! The placement of partners in certain positions may help to deepen male penetration and allow a more direct route for sperm to travel.

The American Pregnancy Association gives a short list of various baby-making positions, each with its own unique explanation. The effective position list includes missionary, doggie style, “living on the edge”, and scissors positions.

Missionary position (man on top) is recommended for a few beneficial aspects. First, the man on top allows for a controlled, deep penetration. The deeper the penetration when the male orgasms, the closer the sperm will be to the cervix. This shortens the travel time for the sperm, improving their conception odds. Also, the women lying on her back keeps a steady travel route for sperm.

Doggie style (from behind) is another position noted for its deep penetration benefits. This position is highly recommended for wanting to try for gender-specific pregnancies. The deep penetration and release of sperm close to the cervix allows for male Y-carrying sperm to swim fast without the harsh environments of the vaginal canal and ultimately, increasing the chances of a male Y sperm to penetrate the egg. (I wrote an article titled, Can You Influence the Sex of Your Baby? on EmpowHER for more detailed information, check it out!).

“Living on the Edge” is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Ladies lie on the edge of the bed or couch and allow gravity to help play its role. I’ve never heard of this position and am a little weary of the potential injuries that could possible occur. Attempt this one with caution!

I’ve tried to imagine scissors position in my head for the last five minutes and I’m still a bit confused (and way too afraid to try and look it up on my computer!). It starts with the women lying on her side. Her bottom leg is in between the man’s legs and top leg can remain lifted or straddled over his side. Man is perpendicular with his bottom leg underneath all legs, top leg between her legs. (I think the man’s view should be looking at the woman’s back). Play around with this one; the APA mentions how achieving a relaxed and playful environment might be just what couples need to achieve pregnancy. This might be it!

Anticipating a pregnancy can be some of the most enjoyable and exciting times of your life. Enjoy these moments!
