Quick and easy weight loss…think again! When it comes to weight loss, there is no such thing as quick, safe and easy--otherwise all of us would never have to diet or go to the gym. The HCGdiet is one of the fad diets like the Atkins or the tapeworm diet.

The following is some basic information about the HCG diet and its potential problems:

The basics of the diet : People on this diet typically do a daily injection of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), a pregnancy hormone, combined with a fat-free, 500 calorie per day diet. It is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for weight loss. There is no reliable evidence of weight loss, fat redistribution, decreased appetite, or improved mood. Possible side effects include ovarian hyperstimulation, swelling, ovarian cyst rupture, multiple births, headache, irritability, depression, fatigue, restlessness, clots in the arteries, and allergic reactions. Individuals with heart disease, kidney disease, seizure disorders, migraines and asthma should be warned about taking this, as it may worsen their condition.

The problems: Proponents of this diet say that this pregnancy hormone and fertility drug redistributes fat, decreases hunger and improves mood in women. This has not been proven. The probable weight loss is due to the low-fat, low calorie diet. There are concerns about possible loss of protein from vital organs and nutritional deficiencies. The starvation which occurs can decrease minerals and cause an electrolyte imbalance. These electrolytes are needed for proper heart function. Heart disease may worsen or a heart attack may occur.

Think about it: On this diet, you will pay money to suffer on the 500 calories a day for about a month, you will probably be moody, you may damage your body, you may gain the weight back and you definitely will make someone else rich.

I lasted about 11 days on this diet due to using homeopathic hcg. I would have stopped 2 days sooner but I kept reading if you go off the diet before the 21 days are up, you'll gain all the weight back and then some! Today I feel dizzy, lightheaded and the spray makes me feel like there's pressure in my head. I was hungry the first week but it started to taper off. It DID NOT reshape my body. I lost weight where I normally do when I work out or diet and left my hips, thighs and belly the same! I lost about 15 lbs of structural fat in those 11 days. Turns out I'm leptin resistant and I don't care about protocol, I'm going off the diet and transitioning into the paleo diet, which allows fats and some carbs. I'm still going to play it safe and cut back on fruit and of course no sugar or starches for the first 3 weeks. Trust me, it's just not worth it to lose weight so quickly only to find out your drops are defective! Go with an hcg weight loss clinic or reputable online company if you're going to do this diet. But keep in mind, if you're LR like me, this diet is pointless!

to the registered nurse your quote "I messed up and had chick peas in a salad on Fri and I gained 3.8 lbs overnight." made me think to ask the question are you going to be doing this HCG VLCD for the rest of your life. If one day one small tiny mess up is going to effect your weight that much there is something really wrong. This is a fad diet not a lifestyle change. With your statement it makes me think that as soon as you go off of this diet you are going to gain every pound and inch that you lost back plus some. the best way to lose weight is a lifestyle change. A healthy eating and exercise plan for the rest of your life is what its going to take to keep healthy and the weight off.

I have been taking hCG and when I stick to 500 cals a day I loose weight, a lot of weight. Far more than if I were just on 500 cals. I this know this fact from my bodily excretions, bowels 3 x a day and not 1 and bladder 8 x a day and not 4/5. Some of that weight loss much burn off as fuel. How unhealthy is it to carry the extra weight every day, apart from the negative mental effects too? I suggest you get a chain from the hardware, it is tiny close linked chain and clips into itself, wear that round your waist which will be a permanent reminder when you are putting on the weight again.

My husband and I are both on our second round of hcg. On our first round he lost 40lbs and I lost 20. During the maintence phase we both exercised and ate better (things that we would have never done overweight), but we felt better about ourselves and wanted to keep it up. Durning this maintence I lost another 7 and he lost another 5. This diet is like anything else, if you do nothing to maintain the lose and you go back to your old habits, you will get the old results.

I came home from the Hospital last night after nearly dying from the HCG diet. I was on the diet for 5 days. Only on the restricted 500 calorie part of the diet for 2 days, after the initial gorge period. I woke in the middle of the night feeling awful. I checked my blood pressure and it was 66/37. I called 911. When the EMT arrived my blood pressure was 55/35. I narrowly escaped death thanks to the quick work of the EMT and emergency room. My veins had already started collapsing. The cardiologist at the hospital told me that people die when their blood pressure gets that low. He also said that I was lucky not to have permanent heart damage. I am 36 and he said the only reason I did not have permanent heart damage was because I was young and healthy. I couldn't believe so much damage could happen in such a short time. He said everyone's body is different on how long a starvation diet can kill them. Anorexia kills people every year with heart failure from the starvation, not necessarily being too thin. The starvation (500 calories) is what dropped my blood pressure to nearly fatale. I beg anyone wanting to try this diet to please learn from my near death experience. I almost killed myself by following this diet exactly and I would have left behind a husband and child whom I love more than anything. Please do not go to these drastic measures, because you may not live to regret it. Thankfully I did live to regret it and regret it I do.

I am sure you did only 500 kcal and not the injection, this would not happen with injection, only with 500 kcal.

Are you still having issues? How is your heart? I had heart palpitations about two weeks after I started...I had no choice but to quit. I thought I was dying and still feel completely lost. it's scary very scary!

I have started having heart problems too! And horrible headaches! I started and stopped the program 3 times. But I never had these health problems before HCG!

I am a registered nurse and because of that, I was very skeptical of HCG. I did a lot of research on the product, watched Dr. Oz's You tube video segment on it, and searched for negative side effects. The only neg. comments I saw were ones from people who don't understand the diet and just think that the 500 cal is responsible for the weight loss. Of course, I was still concerned about the long-term effects of HCG but considering the fact that women can give birth multiple times (14 is the largest # I know of), and those women don't drop dead from all of the HCG floating around their bodies during pregnancy, I figured I give it a shot. Besides, I liked the fact that it's a natural hormone - unlike some of the other diets (which shall remain nameless) that are FULL of chemicals, processed foods and loaded with sodium.
Long story short - I am currently in Phase 3 of my first round of HCG. I ended the VLCD (Very low Calorie Diet...500 cal) phase last friday and my weight was 143. I started 45 days before that at 173.
I messed up and had chick peas in a salad on Fri and I gained 3.8 lbs overnight. I did a steak day as Dr. Simeons suggests and lost 2 of those lbs the following day. The bottom line is - HCG works. It may be a fad, it can be whatever you want to call it but it work. s.
By the way, I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis just before I went on the HCG. My L hip had been bothering me so much that I considered having a cortisone shot. My R knee has been aching ever since a fall a couple of years ago and I injured my L arm's rotator cuff in a fall in Jan. Within 3-4 days after starting the HCG injections, every ache and pain I had were gone. I had a feeling of happiness that I had not experienced in quite a long time. I found myself smiling at commercials that before I would have thought were schmaltzy or silly. So, I am here to tell you that HCG might not be for everyone but it worked for this 57 year old and I am excited to start living my life again at a weight I feel good at and to become active again. Oh yeah, my BP went from 140s over 90s to 127/74 at my last check. My next goal is to get off my cholesterol meds. Wish me luck!! Doctor, please read Pounds and Inches by Dr. Simeons. This diet is proven to work and it's been around...well, almost as long as me! Happy researching!

I agree with some of these comments. HCG definitely worked for me and my husband! I lost 20 lbs my first round, and several inches over my body, went from a size 8 to a 6, Medium to a small-extra small. Hubby lost 30 lbs, also dropped a pant size. Hubby has kept all the weight off (it's been several months, and he splurges from time to time on treats). I am now on my second round. After the first week I lost another 8.5 lbs, and 8 inches over my whole body! I have received so many compliments on my skin, hair, figure. It's obvious it's not muscle loss. Definitely fat loss. Plus I've had so many friends try it and succeed. Sure, it's not for everyone, and you should definitely go to your doctor. But I agree, don't knock it till you try it! Plain old counting calories and exercise just weren't doing it for me anymore.
