Bariatric Surgery: How Have Your Diet And Appetite Changed?

Andrea shares how her diet and appetite have changed since undergoing REALIZE® Band bariatric surgery at Banner North Colorado Medical Center.

Andrea:
My appetite and attitude toward food has changed since having the REALIZE® Band placed. I think there are a few reasons for that. One is the strategy that I learned intentionally - eating smaller snacks during a day, modifying the types of foods that I eat. I really, really avoid carbohydrates. I basically don’t eat tortillas, bread, pasta and hearing that people might think, “That’s not fun. That doesn’t sound like a fun diet to have,” but I truly enjoy food as much or more as I used to.

And I think it’s maybe an unintentional side effect of the band that there are certain foods that you feel more uncomfortable when you are eating now and so I kind of joke around as Pavlovian. So if I eat bread or pasta it makes me feel uncomfortable and I don’t want to eat it anymore so I truly don’t miss it.

One of my favorite dishes was pesto pasta, chicken and mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, and I found other ways to have some of those things or Noodles is a restaurant around here and my kids like to go to and so I go there and it’s primarily pasta. I’ll get whole wheat and then I don’t eat very much of the pasta, but I really, really enjoy the flavoring of the chicken, the salad that comes with it. And so I truthfully really enjoy food as much or more than I used to. I make different choices. I don’t feel deprived.
