Dr. Audrey Tsao describes the different types of hip replacement reconstructions currently available. Dr. Tsao has been a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1994 and practices at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Arizona.

There are several different types of hip reconstructions that you can get. If your initial problem is a fracture of the hip often times you can get a bipolar hip replacement, which is a stem that goes into the thighbone in your femur with a cap that goes inside your own socket.
If you have an arthritic problem often times you will get a complete or a total hip replacement. That involves a stem that goes into your thighbone or your femur with a socket or an acetabular component and the motion in the hip is between the two artificial pieces.
A third type of reconstruction which has become more recently available is a hip resurfacing, and the idea behind a hip resurfacing is to save more bone and it resurfaces or redoes the top of the ball and the stem does not go as far into the thighbone. A socket is also placed in and the mating between the top and the bottom is the artificial resurfacing head and socket

Audrey Tsao received her engineering degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She attended medical school at Cornell University and completed her orthopaedic residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. She returned to Johns Hopkins University to complete a fellowship in Arthritis and Adult reconstruction surgery.
