Dr. Tsao recalls how long a knee replacement commonly lasts and shares when a knee may need to be replaced more than once. Dr. Tsao currently practices in the western Phoenix metropolitan area in private practice and cares for patients at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Arizona.

Dr. Tsao:
Knee replacement surgeries are very successful here in the United States. The average lifespan, according to the latest statistics, is somewhere between 10 to 15 years for a complete knee replacement. Partial knee replacements in Europe are also lasting 10 to 15 years and in the United States they perhaps last a little bit less long by history because of the size of the patients that we have here in the United States.

Current modern day partial knee replacements and current modern day total knee replacements we think last longer. So we’re hoping to push the 15 to 20 year envelope on both types of knee replacements. If by chance you have a knee replacement in your 50s, you should count on having that redone sometime in your life. At 70 to 75 that’s a completely reasonable option.

Redo or revision knee replacements are also very successful. Most surgeons will tell you that we can do it quite successfully with an excellent outcome the first time around when we redo your knee. Partial knees get converted to a complete knee; complete knees get converted to a revision knee.
