Dr. Tsao, a distinguished orthopedic surgeon, shares just one of many success stories about a woman who received a knee replacement at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Arizona.

When I first met Bonnie in my office she was coming in complaining of very significant knee pain. I had done my routine history and physical examination and she looked at me straight in the face and said, “Dr. Tsao, I need to be able to hike the Grand Canyon,” and I looked at her and said, “Really?”
This is a lady who has bone-on-bone arthritis and is absolutely determined to hike the Grand Canyon. Oh, by the way she wants to lose 50 pounds and oh by the way, she wants to make her husband walk so that she can leave him in the dust and oh by the way, she cracks jokes and oh by the way, she is more entertaining than a barrel of monkeys.
So she is a wonderful patient and she came in and wanted to do something for her knees. We went through our treatments and she ultimately required a knee replacement, which I did. One of the questions that she asked me was ‘could I make her taller,’ and I looked at her and said, “Can I make you taller? I’m about to do your knee replacement. I’m not in the skeletal lengthening business,” and she looked at me and she goes, “No, I need my leg taller,” and I told her that I would do my absolute best to straighten the leg so it was straight and that she’d probably feel that it was taller.
After the surgery she told me, “I think my leg is straighter. I feel taller. I think I need to do the other knee so I’m a matched set,” and sure enough we will be embarking on her second knee replacement so that she can hike, I think it’s the Grand Canyon.

Audrey Tsao received her engineering degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She attended medical school at Cornell University and completed her orthopaedic residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. She returned to Johns Hopkins University to complete a fellowship in Arthritis and Adult reconstruction surgery.
