Dr. Tsao describes the main differences between a patient who choses a complete knee replacement over a patients who selects a partial knee replacement. Dr. Tsao attended medical school at Cornell University and completed her orthopaedic residency at Northwestern University in Chicago before joining the Banner Medical Centers in Arizona.

Dr. Tsao:
Patients who come into my office commonly ask me, regarding their knees, if they are a candidate for a complete knee replacement or a partial knee replacement. So partial knee replacements in general are half a knee and you can get partial knee replacements in the kneecap area, on the inside of the knee, as well as the outside of the knee. If you need a complete knee replacement that resurfaces or redoes the kneecap area, the inside of the knee, and the outside of the knee replacement, what determines that is the type of arthritis you have. If you have arthritis that’s only in one area you may be a candidate for a partial knee replacement and your surgeon would be able to determine that based on x-rays, your examination, and your history.

If you have knee pain throughout the entire knee and you have difficulty with being too bowlegged or too knock-kneed you may be in a situation where we can’t correct what you have with just a partial knee replacement and then you would need a full knee replacement.
