Another "Pregnant? or just Stress-induced missed period?" question

The start of my most recent period was on Feb 26 - projected ovulation date being March 14, projected next period March 28 (via MyMonthlyCycles, where I have been keeping track of my period for 1 year). Average cycle - 30 days.

We had protected intercourse on March 3 and 24. The condom didn't break; slipped down maybe an inch but we pushed it right back up.

Now my period is 3 or 4 days late (depending if you count the 28th), with no usual signs of cramping etc that I normally get. Took two HPT's and both came out negative. Discharge looks normal, no tenderness of breasts or anything. I have had a little bit of an upset stomach but I think I may just be getting sick - I am under quite a bit of stress.

I know it's unlikely that I am pregnant, but I am paranoid since I can't afford to have a child right now. I have heard that stress really can throw off a regular period (I have been regular for 8 years now), but I have a hard time believing it since I am so paranoid... help? I don't know what's wrong with me!

Have a GYNO appt coming up in a month, but I'm the type of person who likes to know without going to the doc! It sure would be nice if my period would come!

I took two pregnancy tests about 2 or 3 weeks apart and both came out negative. Should i be worried? HELP.

We will need some more information to help answer your question:

1. What was the date of your last menstrual period?
2. Have you, or are you currently, using any form of hormonal contraceptive (ie, birth control pill)?
3. Are your menstrual cycles usually regular, or are they sometimes irregular?

Anon,

The only thing to do in this case, then, is to maybe wait another week and make an appointment at your doctor's office for a pregnancy test there. It's possible that you tested too early before with the HPTs and that you are pregnant.

If you are not pregnant and are still interested in birth control, talk to your doctor about a different kind. There are many, many different kinds and just because you had side effects on one pill doesn't mean you'll have those on another pill.

Will you come back and update us when you find something out?

I am 16 years old and my boyfriend and i had protected sex once on september 26. My last perid was on Sept 1 and now i am 4 days late. My period is normally from 30-31 days, and it has always been on time. even if we used a condom and the pull out method could i be pregnant? im not ready for a baby. I am soo worried about being pregnnt that i cant concenrate on anything else! Can your period be delayed from sex? am i pregnant?

Lena,

If your last period was on Sept. 1 and you usually have cycles from 30-31 days, you were most likely ovulating somewhere between Sept. 13 and Sept. 23, the most obvious date being around Sept. 18. By Sept. 26, you should have been through that part of your cycle. So even if the condom broke (which it didn't) or if the pullout method didn't work perfectly, you shouldn't have been ovulating.

My guess is that you are just late. No, sex itself doesn't cause a period to be delayed, but other things certainly can, especially changes in medicine or a high stress level. If you are that worried about being pregnant, that stress itself may be the cause of the late period. Wait a few more days and see what happens. Periods can be a week to 10 days late every once in a while for no good reason. If you go that late, you can take a home pregnancy test to be sure. But I'm doubting that you'll have to.

I may or may not have a problem here.

My boyfriend and I had sex for the first time on the first weekend of August. My period would have ended about four days prior to the act itself, having started on July 21st. We used protection of the condom variety; I am pretty sure he ejaculated while still in me, however I can't remember for certain. My period had been acting a bit funny for a few months before hand. It used to be relatively regular, arriving almost every month on the 11th. Eventually, I came to expect it in the early 20's of the month. On the 18th of August, what I assume to be my period came. It was earlier and lighter than usual. However, like always during the period, there were a few clots (which I am under the impression, are somewhat normal). Which gave me reassurance, as a friend joked about my light period at pregnancy spotting.

Anyway, so here I am, October 1st, with no period for the month of september. I am about 7-10 days late. I have had no upset stomach, headache, significant weight gain, tenderness of breasts. I also don't get cramps to begin with really for my period. It is my second year of university and there is a bit of pressure on me about my gpa. Also, this past summer, my dad was extremely ill, almost to the point of not making it. He is off work right now on medical leave whilst gaining back some muscle, my parents are having a bit of financial trouble due to it, the family company which my dad works for is going under and he may not have a job when he gets back. So I am thinking it may be stressed induced.

Also, when I first started getting my period in grade 7, I got it for about three months and then it disappeared for about 7. I dont know how relavent that is, but I wanted to get all the facts out there. Also, this intercourse incident was my first time, and there was a bit of bleeding during the act and in the following day.

Any advice or ideas as to what is going on with my situation would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I guess the most important piece of information that I need is: when was the LAST time you had intercourse, and was it protected (with condom) or unprotected (without any birth control?).

You mentioned your period was on July 21st, and then a light period on August 18th. Your friend joking about "implantation spotting" would not be accurate, as it would literally be a spot on your underwear or when you wiped after urinating, something most women may not notice. It would certainly not be described as "a period lighter than usual", and would not include any clots.

Being 7-10 days late for a period is EXTREMELY common. If you have not had intercourse since after your August 18th menstrual bleeding, you would not have a risk for pregnancy. However, if you have had sex since then, you can always choose to take a home pregnancy test to make sure.

There are many reasons women have late periods, and some women may even miss an entire period one cycle...and this can all be normal. Stress, new medication, recent illness or medical condition...these are all possible causes. Most of the time, your period will begin late or next cycle, and there is nothing to worry about.

That first weekend in August was the last time I have had sex. The period I had on August the 18th was definitely not just a spot in my underwear or a slight tint when wiping after urination. I just found it strange that as opposed to being later than the 21st, it was three days early.

I really appreciate you replying to my comment. It has really put my mind at ease. I was trying to convince myself that it was just the stress of starting school again. I did just switch universities, so there is a high level of stress present in my life at the moment. Now I have nothing to worry about. Thanks so much!
