Q:

Bleeding while the contraceptive patch is on

Hi.
I'm currently doing an extended contraceptive patch cycle, as recommended by a health professional. They told me to keep the patch for three months and then remove.

I've had it on for almost four weeks, and a few days ago breakthrough/withdrawal bleeding started. Is this bleeding entirely normal and happening because the uterus has not shed its lining in about a month and because it sloughs off, as it thins? Is it normal to bleed while the patch is on? Should I continue with putting on a new patch every week and am I protected from pregnancy?

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER.

Consider speaking with the healthcare professional, who applied the patch. That person knows the name of the birth control patch and any possible side effects.

Regards,
Maryann
