Q:

Could I be pregnant?

So I had sex for the first time four days ago. My boyfriend and I used a condom,it didn’t break and he pulled out before he ejaculated. However today,I got some seriously heavy bleeding and I thought I was getting my period early. But it was so much heavier than my regular period and it only lasted a few hours, after which the bleeding stopped. I’m seriously worried that I could be pregnant,or if there is something else wrong with me. Help?

Hello. Thank you for posting.

Some women will bleed after having sex for the first time, while others won't. Both are perfectly normal. A woman may bleed when she has penetrative sex for the first time because of her hymen breaking. The hymen is a thin piece of skin that partially covers the entrance to the vagina. It usually breaks during sex, if it hasn't already broken before, which is common.  Sometimes first-time sex can cause irritation that might also cause bleeding.  Pregnancy should not be a concern if you had protected sex. If you are still bothered by this bleeding, see your doctor to ease your mind.
