Measuring effectiveness during typical use (actual use including inconsistent and incorrect use):

Failure Rate

0.8% for copper T intrauterine device
0.2% for levonorgestrel intrauterine device
0.05% for implanted rod containing small amount of progestin
6% for progestin injection
9% for combined estrogen/progestin oral contraceptive
9% for progestin only oral contraceptive
9% for progestin/estrogen patch. It may be higher for women who weigh more than 198 pounds
9% for hormonal vaginal contraceptive ring
12% for diaphragm or cervical cap
18% for male condom
21% for female condom
28% for spermicide
