Q:

Massive loss of libido - could this be caused by the Mirena coil?

I've been with my partner almost two years and we used to have an amazing sex life. We love experimenting with toys, positions and lingerie. However, I have always known I have a blood deficiency which causes my blood to clot at a dangerous rate. Choices for birth control were left limited and we finally settled on the Mirena coil around 6 months ago. Since then, nothing has been the same. My boyfriend is intent on keeping me satisfied and happy but I don't ever feel like I want to have sex anymore. When we do, it's painful and I struggle to become aroused. We both used to be so active and it's ruining our sex life. My boyfriend is intent on giving me a vaginal orgasm but it seems impossible since the I had the coil fitted. I had multiple problems in the first few months and was admitted to hospital on three occasions where they believed the coil had become dislodged and was causing agonising pain to my abdomen. My boyfriendhas remained so supportive ever since but is understandably keen for me to get the coil removed and is worried about any effects it may be causing me long term. However, because of my blood condition, the coil is the only method of birth control doctors have suggested to me as I also do not respond well to progestrogen only methods. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I'm desperate for a solution as it's seriously affecting both of our self confidence and having a massive impact on our once incredible sex life.

I had the mirena coil for 10 years. I gained so much weight, had a low mood, no interest in sex at all. My husband always blamed the coil, but I dismissed him. I recently got sterilized and had the coil removed. I feel so different in myself, feel like a young woman again. My moods have improved dramatically, I`ve already started to loose weight and my husband is very pleased to have me back...... ;-)

Hello Inquisitive 74,

Thank you for sharing your question with the community. I understand how difficult this must be for you and your boyfriend.  I'd love to give you some helpful information on the matter.

First of all, I want to point out the fact that you had a method of doing things for 2 years that worked for both of you.  Your methods worked so well, that you had an "amazing sex life."  By removing the mirena coil, you have a chance of reigniting the sex life you once had.

If your main concern is birth control, then you now know that the mirena coil is also ruled out as an option.  I do not know what kind of birth control methods you used in the past if any, but it seemed to work for 2 years.  You can always go back to that.

Condoms are also a good contraceptive for your specific situation because it does not involve medications that will dangerously effect your blood condition.

I hope this helps.  Let us know if you have any more questions.
