Plan B side effect or pregnancy?

Hello.
Three days after my period ended, I had sex with my boyfriend. I wasn't ovulating. We used a condom, but it broke. We went and got the plan B pill right away, and I had taken the first pill less than an hour after it happened. I didn't feel sick while taking it like I was warned I might, and thought everything was fine. Now, 5 days later, I am experiencing some light spotting which is a dark brownish with a little light pink. My period isn't due for about 2 weeks. Is this implantation bleeding or just a side effect from the plan b pill? Please help, I am so scared!

Hello Anonymous,

Implantation bleeding will occur about six to 12 days following conception.

How soon after taking the pill did the spotting start?

Your period might be delayed or start earlier than expected. This is a side effect of Plan B. The earlier or later start is usually not more than five days.

You will know the pill worked once you have your period.

Maryann

Hello Anonymous,

This sounds like bleeding caused by taking Plan B.

Implantation bleeding occurs about six to 12 days following conception, when the fertilized egg implants in the lining of the uterus.

It is pink or brown spotting, lasts two to three days, and
never increases to a flow.

It would be wise to speak with your gynecologist if you have further concerns or the bleeding is prolonged.

Maryann

Hi, I had just gotten off of my period sunday may 1st and then my boyfriend and I had sex on thursday may 5th. That night the condom broke and I freaked out because it was around 1 in the morning so walgreens was alrwady closed. I ended up taking plan b the next morning around 9-9:30. I didnt experience many side effects at first; however, the next tuesday (10th) I started to have brownish reddish discharge which eventually turned into light bleeding. It wasnt enough to put in a tampon the first day but then gradually got heavier and I would fill a super tampon after like 4 hours by Wednesday. The bleeding ended on friday but does anyone have an explanation what it was. Implantation bleeding? My period? Ovulation bleeding? A side effect of the pill? Please Im freaking out. Also, when do you think my next period would be as it is supposed to come around the 26th...should I be worried if it doesn't? AHH IM FREAKING OUT. Please help.

So about 2-3 days before my period was do, me and my boyfriend had intercourse. The condom broke but I didn't think anything of it. The day my period was supposed to come it didn't, that same day I took a plan B pill since they're effective about 3 days. And it's been more than a week since I took it and now I'm having light spotting and cramping. Is this a delayed side effect of the Plan B, or could it be implantation bleeding?

Hello Anonymous,

The light spotting is not implantation bleeding.

You were not at risk for becoming pregnant when you had intercourse 2 to 3 days before your period was due. To become pregnant, there must be a released mature egg. In your situation, ovulation was long past, about 2 weeks in the past, With no egg waiting, there was nothing for sperm to fertilize.

In the menstrual cycle, in the absence of pregnancy, progesterone levels drop and your period starts.

By taking Plan B, you gave your body a blast of hormone and most likely offset the normal balance, thus causing a delay in the start of your period.

You can wait or consult your gynecologist.

Maryann, I'm in a similar situation. I had sex when I had three active pills left in my birth control before my period. I have regularly taken birth control for 5 years, but this month I decided to skip the last three pills to start my period faster. My period usually comes three days after my last active pill, but I took plan B on Monday, after having intercourse that resulted in a broken condom on Saturday. Is my period most likely delayed due to the Plan B?
