Q:

Plan B side effect or pregnancy?

Hello.
Three days after my period ended, I had sex with my boyfriend. I wasn't ovulating. We used a condom, but it broke. We went and got the plan B pill right away, and I had taken the first pill less than an hour after it happened. I didn't feel sick while taking it like I was warned I might, and thought everything was fine. Now, 5 days later, I am experiencing some light spotting which is a dark brownish with a little light pink. My period isn't due for about 2 weeks. Is this implantation bleeding or just a side effect from the plan b pill? Please help, I am so scared!

Thank you so much, this really put me at ease. What do you think the doctor might prescribe to get my hormones back in balance?

Hi Anonymous,

Glad to have helped. I really don't know. Your gynecologist may chose a wait and watch approach. That is to wait and allow your hormones to naturally return to normal levels.

Let us know,
Maryann

I got a serum beta hcg test done. The results were <0.10 mIu/ml. What does that mean?

Hi. I got what I thought was my period 2 days ago, but now it has ended. It was flowing just like a normal period would but stopped abruptly today. I'm getting really worried that I maybe pregnant. Is it possible to have this type of bleeding and be pregnant?

Hello Anonymous,

Have you had unprotected sex since your last period? Wait and see if you start flowing again in the next day or two. If not, and you have had unprotected sex, reach out to your gynecologist. There could have been a chance you were in the very early weeks of a pregnancy.

Regards,
Maryann

I had unprotected sex August 22nd, around the time I was ovulating. I took "Take Action" the next day. It's been a week and my boobs were sore for a few days, but aren't anymore. I'm having cramps like I would on my period, but I'm not bleeding. I was feeling nauseous the past few days and have diarrhea. I'm scheduled for my period any day now, but I'm scared. Are these side effects of the pill, signs I'm getting my period, or am I pregnant? I know it's kind of early for pregnancy symptoms, but still. Please help.

Hello Anonymous,

Take Action is the generic form of Plan B One-Step. Side effects include nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, tiredness, dizziness, changes in vaginal bleeding, breast tenderness, diarrhea, or headache.

Try your best to relax. The pill might cause a delay in the start of your period. If you do not have any vaginal bleeding within three weeks of taking the pill, test for pregnancy.

If you have any further concerns, or these symptoms persist or worsen, please contact your physician.

Regards,
Maryann

My period ended July 14th, my boyfriend and I had sex on July 16th. After that we had sex around four times over the next few days. On July 22nd he was sure he finished in me (no condom used, stupidly) so on July 23rd I purchased the Plan B pill because I'm not on birth control and took it immediately, it was no later than 15 hours after we had sex. At first I had no side effects, I felt normal but them over the next few days I started to get some; sore breasts, abdominal pain, tiredness. Those were the only ones I received. Then on July 29th I received a period.. Or what I've been thinking and hoping was a period. I've read I feel like a million different articles and reviews about this pill so I knew a period a week later was to be expected. Well then I got to doing more looking around online and I found out about "implantation bleeding." This period I got only lasted from Friday, July 29th to Monday, August 1st. I read that's normal with Plan B but I also read that this is normal for implantation bleeding. Plus, it said the implantation bleeding occurs 6-12 days after and my period I received was seven days after the sex and six days after the pill which could easier be both? The bleeding was brown to begin with, then went to a light red and was enough to fill up a tampon on Saturday but the the day before and the the last two days I only wore a panty liner and there was hardly anything on it throughout the whole day. Over the last week an a half I would say I've been peeing more frequently, I read that this has happened to some people with the pill but not to others.... I guess it just depends on you, right? I hope so. I've been bloated for probably the same time frame also and I read that this can be normal too or it would e an early pregnancy sign. So I'm really stressed with that because frequent urination and bloating. Yesterday, August 24th I had some cramps and today I have some too. I was just assuming this would be because my period would be coming soon. I know I've read how Plan B can throw off your cycle but I was just assuming and hoping I would receive my next period around the same date as I did the previous month due to the pill. So yesterday I was feeling good about the cramps because I really don't want a baby (I'm a senior in high school) and I know I'm not emotionally or financially able to care for a child. But then I got to Googling things and I found out that cramping 3, 4 or 5 days before period is due can be a sign of pregnancy and I can't get it off my mind at all. I know sex without a condom was a dumb decision and I know it's easy to forget to think sane when you're in the moment but it happened and I've been so stressed since then. I know a pregnancy test will be a good idea but I think I have to miss my period before I do that? I'm extremely scared about what the result I would get with that would be anyways. I've been hoping for the past month I'll get my period, I've cried myself to sleep for about two weeks because I know I made a dumb decision and I'll have to deal with the consequences but I really hope I'm not pregnant but I feel like there's just so many signs leaning toward it. I've been hoping I've been overreacting too (my best friend and my boyfriend thinks I am) but it's also not their body so it's easy to not be worried when it's not happening to you. My boyfriend says if I was pregnant I would probably be having some symptoms by now... I believe him but I also believe people's body's are different.. I haven't had any morning sickness, food cravings, dizziness, any nausea of any sort which I've been thinking is a definite good sign but I don't think everyone experiences the same things during. Honestly, I'm just hoping I'm not because I'm in no say ready for a baby and my family aren't people who accept things well. I've been stressed ever since I took the pill basically, I know stress can mess with your period too but I just don't know what else to do. Please help.

Hello Anonymous,

I am sorry that no one has replied to your post. I am troubled to hear how stressed you have been.

Have you gotten your period yet? You are correct that stress can cause a delay in the start of your period.

I can appreciate how confused you must be from all that you have read.

Implantation bleeding is pink or brown spotting. It lasts about two to three days, never increases to a flow, and goes away on its own. It occurs about six to 12 days following conception.

Anonymous, I do not think you were at risk for becoming pregnant during intercourse on July 16. That was too early for ovulation to occur. Ovulation occurs mid cycle about two weeks before the start of your period. You had intercourse two days after your period ended. Without a released egg to be fertilized, there was no risk for pregnancy.

Plan B prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation. Considering when you took the pill, that can explain why your period is late.

Regards,
Maryann
