Q:

Pregnant or stressed induced missed period?

Two weeks ago my boyfriend and I had sex twice one night for the fist time in about 6 months. He used a condom and pulled out both times. My period is now 3 days late this week. It is regular for the most part every month but I can not remember what my body usually does during PMS. I have not had any excessive discharge except today a redish brown discharge once. I drink a lot of water so I usually have to pee often but in the case of being extremely paranoid this week, I go to the bathroom a lot to check if my period has shown and I pee a little then. I have felt slight cramps off and on. And my appatie, being Christmas and all, as been maybe a little more snacky than usual. But isn't that the symptoms of PMS ? Not necessarily pregnancy? I have also been very stressed latel . This was finals week and am was having issues with my boyfriend this last week and issues with family and friend . I have felt very irritable and tense lately. A lot of my worrying is that I may be pregnant. I am not ready for a baby by any means. We used condoms and pulled out and I'm stressed. I'm afraid to take a pregnancy test in the fear of a positive. Should I just wait it out? What is the serious likelihood I'm pregnant? And any advice to not stress so much about this possible pregnancy?

Hi Anon,

Thank you for reaching out to the EmpowHER community and sharing your question!

You sure have a lot going on, and finals, holidays and stress of relationships can really make you worry, especially if you think there's a chance you could be pregnant.

The reddish brown discharge is a sign that your period is right around the corner. Stressing out will only delay it, so try to relax or keep your mind on other things.

Did your bf have any concerns that maybe the condom broke or anything like that? Using condoms and pulling out will definitely help from an unwanted pregnancy. Unfortunately, you will just have to let mother nature run it's course and wait for your period to come or bite the bullet and take a pregnancy test.

A pregnancy test can be taken 10-14 days after sex and when taken correctly, will certainly be accurate by the time your period is due.

I hope that this eases your mind. Let me know if your period starts or you decide to take a pregnancy test.

Best,

Kristin

Kristin,
Thanks so much for your response. I did in fact take a pregnancy test just to ease my mind and it came up negative. Then after waiting a week my period showed up. It might have just been stress enduced. It never has bee. That late because of stress though which is why I was so concerned. Thank you for your calming words and response.
Happy new year.
