What are my chances of getting pregnant if i missed one pill and made it up ASAP?

I missed one pill Thursday night, in my third week, but made it up as soon as i woke up on Friday morning. I also took my pill about 3 hours late on Saturday night, which would have been my last active pill. My boyfriend and I had sex soon after. We used a condom, but it broke. He had already went shortly before we had sex. He went inside of me not knowing the condom broke, but he barely went. What are my chances of getting pregnant?

Hello Anonymous,

Missing three active pills in a row and not using a backup method, like a condom, does put you at risk. The withdrawal method is not the most effective protection, but if he didn't ejaculate, that would decrease your risk.

Since you had withdrawal bleeding, you are okay and did not become pregnant.

Hello Anonymous,

It is all in the timing. Did you miss the pill on the same day that you had intercourse?

The rule of seven is a good way to remember if you are at risk. Seven days without an active pill puts you at risk for becoming pregnant if you have unprotected (such as no backup method used) intercourse. The seven days include missing the first two days of a new pack (added to five days of placebo pills) and missing doses at the end of the pack.

Hello Anonymous,

You should be okay and not at risk for being pregnant as long as you have not had interourse since last Friday morning. The only risk would be that sperm can live in a woman's reproductive tract for up to five days. Tuesday was day four and Wednesday was day five.

Hopefully, any sperm had died by Wednesday when you missed the evening dose.

My period ended this past Sunday so I of course wasn't on the pill last week bc it's the week of the placebos. I should have started a new pack this past Sunday which was the last day of my period but I accidentally started taking the placebo pills again bc I had the pill dispenser upside down. I have an 8 month old so I blame lack of sleep. Anyway it wasn't until Tuesday that I realized what I was doing and I had missed Sunday and Monday which would of been the first week of a new pack. We had sex this past Monday. Is there a chance I could get pregnant or ovulated in just that short time. Especially since I hadn't taken any pills the week before since I was on my period.

Hello Anonymous,

I can appreciate how lack of sleep affects your behavior. I hate to add to any stress, but yes there was a risk for becoming pregnant.

When and how many active pills missed determines the risk for ovulating and becoming pregnant if you have intercourse.

Missing two active pills added to a week of inactive pills brings the total to seven days without any synthetic hormones to keep levels constant and prevent ovulation.

Reach out to your gynecologist about this and ask if and when you should test and should you just continue taking the active pills.

I had unprotected sex and took pregnancy tests 24, 26 and now 35 days after unprotected sex and all came back negative, I still am freaking out because I'm experiencing lower back pain, pain in my breasts and some cramping... Are tests reliable after the amount of time I waited to take them? Am I just freaking out? I am on the pill but missed one, had a withdrawal bleed at my normal time 9 days after sex.

Hello Anonymous,

If you only missed one birth control pill during the pack, then you were protected. Unless, you had intercourse on the day you missed the dose.

Since you had withdrawal bleeding at your normal time, nine days after sex, then you can accept the negative test results, and you are not pregnant.
