Dr. Skloven provides tips to help women with pulmonary hypertension better communicate with their doctors about their condition. Dr. Skloven was a Cardiology Fellow under Dr. Eugene Braunwald from 1970 to 1972 in San Diego, California and now works at Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa, Arizona.

Dr. Skloven:
I think the three most important tips that I can give you with regard to communicating with your doctor about your pulmonary hypertension really relate to the major symptoms of this disease because that’s what he’s got to understand in terms of how you’re doing so he can make the decisions about treatment basically, and the major symptoms are shortness of breath and signs of what we call right-sided heart failure, which is swelling, fluid retention in your lower extremities in your feet and also fatigue, feeling extremely tired.

Now, basically what he needs to know at every visit is what’s your energy level like, whether you’re becoming more and more tired more easily, whether you’re having difficulties with swelling in your feet, particularly as the day goes on, and if your breathing is getting worse with just everyday activities. And by using these tips you’ll better communicate with your doctor.
