Sexual health expert Dr. Goldstein from San Diego Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital answers the question, "What affects does menopause have on a woman's sexual health?"
Menopause has great effects on women’s sexual health. Menopause is a condition defined by lack of menses, but in particular the ovary stops the synthesis and release of estrodyle. Estrodyle is a very critical hormone in many aspects of a woman’s overall health but in particular, vaginal health, sexual interest, clitoral health, labial health are all related to the 17 beta-estrodiol levels.
So it's extremely common to have some sexual problems in menopause, and then you might note that since sexual issues are couples’ problems, when a woman turns 50, ideally the partner is in and around that age, and it is not uncommon for the partner to have sexual problems or for even the partner to have great health problems that prevents him from having sexual activity or has even passed, and that leaves the woman without even a sexual partner. So there are lots of issues that are involved in menopause.
