Annette explains what the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance is.

Annette:
The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance is a national organization of women founded essentially to save women’s lives. We work with Congress to make sure that Congressional members understand gynecologic disease so that they can make the appropriate decisions for women’s health.

We take survivors to Capital Hill every year so that our survivors can talk directly with Congressional members about how not only they had been affected but the community is affected, how women are no longer able to work, and what effect that has on their families.

We talk with the National Cancer Institute about how to represent women’s issues regarding this disease so that research is directed in the appropriate way. We help to evaluate research projects.

We have a program to inform medical students, third-year medical students. We’re in 50 medical schools across the country and 17 in Canada, and our job there is to take survivors to the future doctors of America so that they can hear the stories of women who have been misdiagnosed.

And we have a grassroots organization basically to inform women and to empower them, to make them feel that they’re part of a community, and to not take ovarian cancer as a terrible and horrible disease that’s fallen upon them, but to take it as an experience that they can live with and they can grow through so that they can live their life in a more purposeful way now that they have this situation to cope with.

We really try to help women to embrace their life regardless of the circumstances and to find happiness and peace in whatever their situation is.
