Dr. Wilson shares if there are any foods a woman should avoid while trying to get pregnant.

Dr. Wilson:
If you’re trying to get pregnant and you’re anticipating your pregnancy, the foods that you should avoid would be any foods that you think might increase your likelihood to get sick or get a stomach infection because the idea is that when you’re pregnant you want to have the least likelihood of being really sick.

So that’s why you’ll often hear a recommendation to avoid raw foods like raw fish or sushi when you might be getting pregnant or you are pregnant. That's to avoid getting a parasitic infection while you’re pregnant, also anything that you potentially might have an allergic reaction to.

So there are some cheeses and other seafoods and things that you should avoid just to inhibit those kinds of more severe reactions while you are pregnant. At the same time, I would like to emphasize the things that you should eat when you’re trying to get pregnant, and that would be to choose organic foods and whole foods that have the minimum or no processing involved, have foods that are nutrient-dense, meaning they have lots of nutrients in them like eggs and whole grains.

I always recommend to eat every three hours and to include protein when you eat. It’s great to include whole foods and to minimize sugars in your diet when you’re trying to get pregnant.
