Dr. Bliss describes the significant importance of listening to patients and asks patients to come prepared to appointments with questions.

EmpowHER Correspondent:
The first thing you notice when meeting Dr. Aminah Bliss is her warmth and smile. While at UCLA Medical School, Aminah found she had an interest in psychiatry, but she found that another specialty would allow her to serve patients’ mental and physical health even better.

Dr. Aminah Bliss:
I always loved the interactions with people. I love talking to people, getting to know people, especially women because I feel like women are just easy to get to know and easy to listen to, and I like to also be a great listener when they talk to me.

EmpowHER Correspondent:
And it was seeing the connection between mental and physical health that helped Dr. Bliss understand how doctors can do a better job communicating with their patients.

Dr. Aminah Bliss:
So I learnt a lot of that in med school and residency. I love psychiatry. I love learning about depression and anxiety, and a lot of that goes along into having babies.

There’s a lot of psychologic aspects to medicine that I think are forgotten a lot of time and really listening and being empathic and really a lot of patients, they just want to be listened to; they want to be heard. You know, they may come with a lot of complicated questions, but all you really need to do is sit and listen to the patient and really kind of get to the heart of the matter and it can really be sorted out fairly simply and fairly quickly.

EmpowHER Correspondent:
And patients can ensure better communication with their doctor by being prepared.

Dr. Aminah Bliss:
Come in with a list of questions and don’t be afraid and just to know that we’re there for you. I mean, a lot of times I know there’s this expectation of, “I don’t know what the doctor is going to say. I don’t want to hear bad news.” But just to know that we’re on your side.

EmpowHER Correspondent:
Dr. Bliss says you must always act as your own advocate, so if all of your questions haven’t been answered, ask for a follow-up appointment or more time.
