Allergies: Can They Be Outgrown? MonkeyBusiness Images/PhotoSpin

Allergies! They can cause such enormous upset in the lives of men, women and children. Allergies can also be very frustrating conditions because it seems like they can come and go.

Some people have allergies in childhood that seem to go away as they get older — as if the people have outgrown them. Some times allergies actually seem to come back decades later, sometimes worse than before.

I have also noticed that when you move from one city to another, you might all of a sudden experience new allergies.

Allergies are a response from the immune system. Your immune system is designed to protect you from harmful substances that enter your body through your nose, eyes and mouth. Your immune system mistakenly identifies harmless substances as harmful ones, and responds with uncomfortable symptoms.

If you have a severe allergic response to a substance, it is called an IgE reaction leading to anaphylactic shock. This is the most dangerous type of reaction, because it can progress to life-threatening symptoms like difficulty breathing or closing of the throat.

If you suspect that you are seeing this type of reaction, go to an emergency room as soon as possible for treatment.

Another common allergic reaction, IgG delayed hypersensitivity reaction, is where the immune symptom responds but it is not usually fatal.

There is conflicting information by doctors as to whether allergies can be outgrown or not.

According to WebMD, a study from Sweden found that 99 percent of the participants still had allergies 12 years later, even though almost 40 percent reported improvement.

Some experts support the idea that allergies may improve. Symptoms can sometimes lessen, or even seem to go away all together.

When it comes to treating allergies, the key is to support the immune symptom in ways that won't cause it to overreact. This can be done naturally or with prescribed medications. Working with a qualified practitioner can make all the difference.
