Ginger introduces herself, describes her gastric bypass surgery, and gives advice for women considering this surgery.
Hi, I am Ginger, and I am a patient of Dr. Dahiya’s. And I had the gastric bypass surgery a year ago, and I have lost 145 pounds since I have had the surgery.
It was the easiest thing I have ever done. There was no pain. It was, I thought it was going to be really bad, but it wasn’t bad. It was, they get you out of bed and you just walk. There’s six small incisions. I never had a problem with the incisions.
It was easy. I was two days in the hospital. Then I stayed two days in a hotel because the doctor wanted me close to home, I mean close to his office in case there was a problem since I lived out of town, 90 miles away, and I stayed at the hotel and I was fine. I was fine.
I went home and you just walk–the main thing about this surgery is walking. You have to walk, and some people think, “Oh, I’ll be okay.” No, you have to walk, and that’s one way to lose weight totally is to walk. And I walked six, seven times a day, and I just walked around the outside of my house because they didn’t want you to walk a mile or something, but you have to keep moving because they don’t want you to get a blood clot. That is a thing for the surgery, but then that’s with a lot of surgeries.
So I would walk even in the middle of the night because I was so afraid, but everybody’d say, “You’re a little obsessed.” I go, “No, I am just going to follow the rules.” But the walking helps you lose the weight, and at first it’s very hard because you are like “Wow, I am hungry,” but you knew you can’t eat that much. You can only eat a little bit, and a lot of people do think that you are going to not be hungry, that it’s just a quick fix. No, it isn’t a quick fix. It is something that you have to be prepared for, and I was prepared for it.
It took me a couple of years to think about it, but I had been overweight all my life, and I have been on every single diet there is. And I read the book, read it and I said, “No, I am going to do this.” And I kept my mind to it, and once you get through the first month it’s fine.
You have to want to do it, though. It’s a tool; it’s not a diet. It’s a tool; it’s a different way of life, and you learn to eat. You learn to deal with it if you want to do it, but if you are not, then I don’t recommend anybody should do it because you are going to be unhappy, and I am not unhappy. I mean, I have lost, I weighed 290 pounds, and I weigh 145 in a little less than a year, and it’s like a miracle.
