Fortunately, I didn't have the experience you went through but have had elevated cholesterol in my life and have been on Lipitor for years, which, fortunately keeps it at bay; however I eat oatmeal for breakfast,(steelcut is best), take garlicin with Niacin, which naturally controls cholesterol, try being on low fat eating habits. Would be very interested to find out what treatment you were under to balance your hormones, that affected and remedied your cholesterol level. I stayed away from hormone treatment, as I had cancer in my family.
I'd appreciate hearing from you,
Erika

The Mayo Clinic has some great ways to reduce cholesterol, including your suggestion, Erica, of steel-cut oatmeal. I am trying to add most of these things to my diet!
1. Foods are now available that have been fortified with sterols or stanols — substances found in plants that help block the absorption of cholesterol. Margarines, orange juice and yogurt drinks fortified with plant sterols can help reduce LDL cholesterol by more than 10 percent.
2. Studies have shown that walnuts and almonds can significantly reduce blood cholesterol, resulting in a marked improvement within just four weeks.
3. Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, psyllium, barley and prunes.
4. Research has supported the cholesterol-lowering benefits of eating fatty fish because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids
5. Extra-virgin olive oil contains a potent mix of antioxidants that can lower your "bad" (LDL) cholesterol but leave your "good" (HDL) cholesterol untouched. (Stay away from "light" olive oil).

I had always heard(and it works for me) that to keep cholesterol down, it's best to avoid animal products: flesh and dairy produce, eat healthily(fish, soy, fruit, vegetables)rather than taking drugs which can have other side effects. Have you even tried a more natural approach?
