Hi Anon

There are more things to consider when having surgery in old age - simply because of old age.

General and overall health has to be considered as well as previous surgeries and current health conditions. An 84 year going under anesthesia can be a serious thing (it's serious anyway).

Prolonged care may be needed post surgery and recovery may be longer.

Upon saying that, if the patient can benefit more from surgery than without, surgery can be very successful. The patient will need to talk to his/her doctor about her own particular benefits and risks. In many cases, the age of the patient - if in the care of a well-qualified doctor - should not  be the deciding factor.
