Q:

Am I possibly pregnant?

I have extremely irregular periods but the past two months I have had my period (only 14 days apart) and 5 days ago I had unprotected sex but he did not ejaculate inside. I know that the withdrawal method is not reliable and can pass on stds and contain sperm so I quickly took the morning after pill (1 hour later) and did not vomit or anything like that after.

I had cramps right after eating the pills and the pharmacist said it is probably because I have eaten it twice in two months which is too much. The cramping has not been bad but it has caused discomfort and I have been extremely gassy. As far as I am aware I have not had any nausea or tender breasts or any other pregnancy symptoms. Today (5 days after sex) I had slight bleeding which based on photos looked like implantation bleeding. But then a small flow of blood rushed out that filled around 4-5cm of my underwear with blood. I still have cramps. I always have cramps before my periods and although it has only been 10 days after my last period, (my last two periods were 14 days apart).

Hello Scarlett lee,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. I am glad you came to us with your concern.

I do not think you are pregnant. The bleeding was most likely induced by taking the morning after pill. It was too early to be implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding occurs six to 12 days following conception; is pink to brown spotting; never increases to a flow.

The pharmacist was correct. You should never take an emergency contraceptive more than once in a menstrual cycle period and never frequently.

I urge you to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist. Having two periods only 14 days apart is not normal. It could be the result of taking an ECP more than once. It would indicate an underlying hormonal condition.

Since you are sexually active, during the appointment discuss birth control options. Choose one that will work for you.

Regards,
Maryann

Hi everyone.. i had unprotected sex on april 29 & 30. I had spotting on may 3. I also had 2 days mild bleeding/spotting on May 15 & 16 and starting to have same symptoms of pregnancy and frequently urinating. I'm expecting my period to come on May 18 however it did not come until on May 23 i had mild bleeding (pinkish to brownish blood) same on the next day May 24 and now, May 25 i am bleeding just like a normal period but with no clot. I've never experience this in my entire menstrual cycle. WHAT COULD THIS BE? PLEASE HELP.

Hello Anonymous,

Did you have unprotected sex before April 29 and 30?

If so, one could think the spotting on May 3 was implantation bleeding. But, implantation bleeding occurs six to 12 days following conception. Some women will have slight cramping and spotting when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining.

How old are you?

If you are in your late 40s to early 50s, the spotting and delay in the start of your period could be an early sign of perimenopause.

Since you are now having a normal menstrual flow, you are not pregnant. Consider speaking with your gynecologist about this recent change. That is your best resource.

Regards,
Maryann
